Touch & Check-in Drills

The Check-in is the starting point and foundation of the programme, the better your ability to get your dog to pay attention (Check-In) the better your ability to help them navigate the modern rules at the park around dogs and people.

Attach the long line with a firm collar, hold the end of the line, keep the line lose, and on the ground.

1 Choose the length you're comfortable checking in: stand on the line with the ball of your foot

2 If your dog stops release the line and walk on

3 If your dog pulls, walk up the line, pose, then release and walk on

Short Recall Drills

The Short recall allows you to keep control of your dog in any environment and bring your dog to you.

1 Ask your dog to "Come" and walk backward a few steps, (If your dog doesn't recall, pull the line and praise when they recall)

2 When this action is smooth and your dog recalls without pulling the line you can work on a focused recall, hold out your palm and say "Touch" The goal is for your dog to touch your hand with their nose.

Distance Recall Drills

The Distance recall allows you to keep control of your dog in any environment and bring your dog to you.  This is the only time I want my dog to be 10 out of 10 excited to come back to me and use their name.

Home Practice

1 Start at a short distance ie kitchen dining room, call your dog, then be super excited and tactile, increase the distance as you go until you are playing hide and seek but with a recall.
2 When the recall is consistent and you feel confident, you can start to try the recall in the park, remember to build up distractions slowly.

(Note: The distance should start off at least 3-5 meters)

The Close Walk: is more advanced, once steps 1-3 have become solid you can ask for a close walk.

1 When a distraction is close ask your dog to "heel" by your side following your palm.

(Use the "Touch" command, set up for success, and keep at least 2-3 meters from the distraction)
2 Keep your dog close and release when you have passed the distraction.
3 At any point you lose control use your Control position Down.

Distance Down Drill

The Distance Down helps you have peace of mind once you have given your dog freedom, the saying goes "If in doubt drop them DOWN" at any distance.

1 When practicing the down try and manufacture a short distance from your dog, keep rewarding this behaviour.
2 Gradually build up the distance and duration until it is comfortable and easy at distance.
